Year of establishment -
Government Degree College Baramulla is the first institute of Jammu and Kashmir providing undergraduate courses in Mass Communication and Multimedia through its well-established Department of Media Studies. The Department of Media Studies started in 2002, when it began offering a vocational programme in Mass Communication. Since 2004, the department has been offering two courses—1) Bachelors in Mass Communication and Multimedia Production or BMMMC {which was previously Mass Communication or Multimedia Production or MCMP}, 2) Mass Communication and Video Production. The programmes are designed to prepare students for the careers in Filmmaking, Photography, Reporting, Radio and TV production, Multimedia Production including Graphic designing, Animation and Web designing, Advertising and Public Relations and in wide range of media professions where they are able to exploit media technology to unveil the obscure.
At present, the department is the Hub to all the colleges offering or aiming to offer courses in Mass Communication and Multimedia. As one of the oldest undergrad media departments in north India, the department provides assistance and expertise to the colleges.
The department has the distinction of being the oldest in north India to train students in Multimedia and various fields and sub-fields of Mass Communication and Journalism.
Thus, the department attracts students from across Kashmir and even outside.
Every year, the pass-outs from the department get admission to various premier institutions of India like AJKMCRC at Jamia Millia Islamia, Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Film and Television Institute of India, Symbiosis Institute of Communication etc.

Two multimedia labs equipped with high-end computers and software.
Video Production units :
Eight units, each comprising of cameras, tripods, microphones, etc.
Smart-classrooms :
One, fitted with all necessary ICT devices.
Audio Production Units :
Six units, each comprising of different microphones, recoding devices, etc.
Library :
One library with books, journals, magazines, and newspapers.
E-library :
One, with digital learning material in the form of ebooks, e-content lectures, and tutorials available for the students.
Upcoming facilities :
The department is in the process of augmenting its infrastructure with additional studio, labs, and smart classrooms.
