Year of establishment - 1972 The department of Botany was established with an aim to train the desirous students about understanding and practicing various aspects of plant Sciences. The course content at UG level is designed to take care of classical, contemporary and applied aspects of Botany. Alumni of the department have excelled in the fields of teaching, research and administration. Some of the important areas which are being taught at UG level are Thallophytes, Gymnosperms, Angiosperms, Biochemistry, plant Physiology, Cell biology, Molecular biology, Plant Taxonomy, Biodiversity and Plant Ecology. The theoretical component of the curriculum is adequately supplemented by practical coursework in the laboratory as well as in the open field and in-house Botanical Museum.

The department has a computer lab with adequate facilities which is put to maximum use by faculty and students. The department of Botany takes care of entire college landscaping, particularly various compulsory ingredients of the department like Green House, Botanical garden, Rock garden, Medicinal and Aromatic plants garden (MAPs) and Temperate Rosaceous Fruit Garden. Various sections have been designed within the botanical garden like shrubbery, rosary and coniferatum. The perennial shrubs have been identified and are tagged with name plated which displays their vernacular as well as botanical name. The department has more recently upgraded its herbarium which contains plant specimens of the district Baramulla and adjoining areas, by way of their proper mounting, labeling and identification. Equipped with adequate and latest agricultural tools and manpower, the department ensures that each garden/park is dotted with annuals and perennial ornamental plants which are prescribed in the UG Curriculum and which otherwise improve the aesthetic beauty and ornamentation of gardens. The faculty of the department solicits technical assistance and expertise from research institutes like Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture (CITH) Rangraeth Srinagar, Indian Institute of Integrated Medicine (IIIM) Sanatnagar Srinagar, Department of Floriculture, Govt. of J&K, SKUAST Kashmir and Kashmir University Botanical Garden (KUBG). The department also aims to inculcate entrepreneurship skill by way of providing demonstration to students about floriculture, Medicinal and Aromatic plants- their propagation and extraction of constituents oils which find application in perfumery industry.
